The page came at 4:45. “The secret location for the surprise artist will be revealed at 5:00 pm, it will be Sleepy Hollow’s basketball court”. Just 15 minutes before the information hit the airwaves for the rest of the world. The result was a day of pure chaos that is the normal routine to any up and coming Southern rap star. So it began, the hunt for David Banner.

This hunt began with a promotional radio tour stopping in Toledo, OH. But David Banner’s journey originated from West Jackson, Mississippi. If you ask him what part of Mississippi he’s from he’ll tell you that he’s from every part. To the naked eye he’s in a position that a lot of cats growing up in the projects aspire to be. From the down bottom of sleeping on the floor with dogs, to a cross-country tour on an 80-foot bus, wrapped with his face, and onboard studio.

Starting out with the group Crooked Lettaz, Banner did 80% of the production for the groups critically acclaimed; yet slept on, debut album Grey Skies. Beyond that he’s done featured production on the OZ, and Black Mask soundtracks. As well as Kane and Abel’s Gotta Pay: Most Wanted, and has track production pending release with Noreaga, Ras Kass, Fiend, Lil Flip, Shock G of Digital Underground, along with a slew of other artists. This man has worked hard for his position. Right now he’s got a hot single blazing the clubs and airwaves called Get Down (Like A Pimp) featuring Houston’s own Lil Flip. Plus his new effort, Mississippi – The Album is about to further his career as a made man.

I followed his tour bus to the local radio station for an on air interview. From the station he told Cornbread, a local intern to take him straight to the hood. After a three hour tour of two project basketball courts, a couple of games of 21, autograph signings, kissing babies, and enough photo ops to equal a dvd release, I was able to build with SRC’s newest talent on the back of his tour bus.
