BRINGING DA LIGHT
With
the international success of "Gimme The Light", Meesta
Paul plans on bringing a little dancehall "Dutty Rock"
to the world.

My family is originally from the "da islands" so, I
have always been in love with Island Riddums, Reggae,
Dancehall and Island Club tracks...I really got into dancehall
way back in 1993 in Panama...working up
sweats to Shabba, Supercat, old Marley and the Wailers up in the
Yacht Club. I swear Dr. Mengela
and a bunch of Nazi scientists put something in the water down
there...but, I digress. I was really looking
forward to seeing Sean Paul perform in Chicago in late September
2002, just when he was starting to
get mad love here in the US.
With
Sean Paul's recent "continental" fame , courtesy of
the video for the single "Gimme The Light" that
is in heavy rotation on BET and MTV, a sold out crowd was anxiously
packed into the Wylde Hare in
Chicago, awaiting a performance from the man of the hour. hell,
the brother even saw Hollywood star
Leon in the audience.
After
a group of talented Chicago based openers, including my man Baby
J (a Reggae crooner in his own right),
the crowd became very anxious around midnight for Sean to take
the stage. Meesta Paul hit the stage around
12:40 sporting a matching Pelle Pelle jean outfit like the one
in "Gimme The Light" and went into a whirlwind
performance (to a DAT, no band for this one), though the opening
acts flowed madly with the house band.
He featured his hits with a mixture of new and old tunes and even
using the 'I get high' riddim that is also
currently popular in Hip Hop. Paul's lyrics stayed purely true
to dancehall though and after a short encore,
he wrapped up the show with 'Tiger Bone' and of course, 'Gimme
The Light'.
The
entire front of the venue was filled with 99% female fans who
screamed and cheered throughout Sean
Paul's performance. judging from their high pitched screams and
moans the after party was gonnabe off
the chain!
After
viewing his performance I looked on an interview with anticipation
for Ladies and Gentleman, there's a
new King from Kingston... we gonna be seeing a lot more of Mr.
Sean Paul.
Keeping
up with a hectic schedule and an even more disciplined work ethic...I
caught up with Sean Paul in
Novemeber right after his US release of 'Dutty Rock', he found
time (to try) to sit down with me for an interview.
That is between cell phone calls and two-way pages.
